Commissioner Wojciechowski visits La Palma following the eruption of Cumbre Vieja

Commissioner Wojciechowski visited the island of La Palma yesterday to evaluate the situation and assess the impact on the agricultural sector of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The commissioner first visited different farms affected by the eruption. Afterwards he had a working lunch offered by Luis Planas, Minister for Agriculture of Spain, with the participation of local authorities, which was followed by a meeting with representatives of the agricultural sector.

“Yesterday’s visit is a valuable opportunity to meet with the farmers and rural communities of La Palma”, stated Commissioner Wojciechowski.  “I would like to share my sympathy for their losses and gain a greater understanding of the challenges they face. My visit underlines the importance of La Palma’s agricultural sector in providing employment for local communities, as well as nutritious, high-quality produce for European consumers.  The farmers, foresters, and rural communities of La Palma can count on EU support to help rebuild their lives and businesses over the coming months and years.”
